Water Safety

Legionnaire's disease is a serious pneumonia that is deadly for about one out of every 10 people who get it.find out more

Water is not sterile or safe. Water has the potential to harbor harmful bacteria such as Legionella. This bacteria is harmful and causes severe illness and even death. Did you know? For every Gallon of water entering your building and facility water has the ability to carry 1,892,500 Bacterial colonies with it.

The MCL for heterotrophic plate count is a Treatment Technique. Under U.S. EPA's Surface Water Treatment Rule, systems using surface water or groundwater under the direct influence of surface water must achieve a heterotrophic plate count (HPC) no greater than 500 bacterial colonies per milliliter (67 FR 1811; U.S. EPA, 2002).

How does Legionella spread?

Legionella Bacteria is naturally found in surface water. Even though our municipal water supplies are treated Legionella can still survive and infiltrate water sources such as cooling tower water, shower systems, and potable water supplies.
