Legionella Outbreaks on the Rise

It has been well published that cases of Legionellosis have been trending upward in the US.

Legionellosis is a reportable disease. Data is collected on this disease by the CDC, ( Center for Disease Control & Prevention ). All of this data is available online. CDC publishes the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report ( MMWR ) and it shows Legionellosis cases have been trending upward in the United States.

Data taken from The CDC shows that the reported cases for Legionellosis went from around 3,000 in 2010 up to 5,250 in 2016. This data is taken from all 50 states, NYC and the District of Columbia. Out of the states, Ohio and Upstate NY show the highest Legionellosis cases. NYC alone reported 572 cases in 2015.

Even though data shows Legionellosis cases rising steadily across the US. New York shows promising data that since enacting laws to combat Legionella in Cooling towers, cases in New York have declined by 30 - 35%.
